Motorcycle & Scooter Keys

The key still opens the seat and unlocks the fork, but at the ignition it needs a slow half-turn and a small lift before the switch engages, a habit that has crept in over years of daily starts.

In plain words

What is actually possible depends on whether a working key still exists somewhere. If one does, even a spare kept by a family member or a dealership record of the code, a fresh key can usually be cut or duplicated directly from it. If every key for the machine is gone, the locksmith reads the lock itself, translating wafer depths into a cut, or, on a machine with an immobiliser, pairs a new transponder where that system allows it, since some instead need the whole unit replaced. Either route aims for a key that starts the engine and operates the other locks the owner wants included.

The call
The bike came home from its previous owner with a single worn key that starts the engine but does nothing for the seat latch or the fuel cap, both of which answer to keys nobody handed over.

How the visit goes

  1. Scene 1

    Reading the lock family

Every motorcycle lock has a shape and a history that tells the locksmith what they are working with. The keyway profile, the number of wafers, whether the plug is single- or double-sided, and any maker's mark on the lock face narrow down which key blank and which cutting code apply. Manufacturers reuse wafer counts across very different keyway profiles, so a lock that looks similar to another model can still refuse a blank cut for it. Identifying the lock correctly before cutting anything is what keeps the first key made for the machine the right one.

  2. Scene 2

    Freeing a seized steering lock

A steering lock seized by rust, dried grease or months of disuse is worked open with the cleaning method the lock's own maker directs and small, repeated movements rather than a harder push on the key. The locksmith lets the fluid sit, works the lock gently from both directions, and repeats rather than reaching for more force, since a stuck lock forced past its resistance is more likely to break internally than release cleanly. Once it turns freely through its full range, it is cycled several times and dressed with whatever lubricant its maker specifies so it moves easily the next time the machine is parked.

  3. Scene 3

The old key is no longer a concern

Where locks were rekeyed rather than simply cut around, whoever holds an old key is left with a blade that fits the keyway but normally will not turn the plug once it is rekeyed. That is worth mentioning to anyone who previously had access to the machine, such as a former co-owner or a shop that kept a copy on file, since the new combination makes their old key no more useful than a spare piece of metal. Keeping the new keys distinct in a bag or on a labelled ring avoids mixing them up with anything cut before the visit.

What shapes the quoteBradburn Subdivision Lock & Key Co.

Bringing multiple locks onto one key
Bringing the seat, fuel cap or a storage lock onto the ignition's key is extra work per lock rekeyed, separate from cutting the key itself, and is priced as its own line.
Whether the lock needs replacing
Where wafers, springs or the housing itself are worn or damaged beyond a clean repair, replacing the lock rather than continuing to chase a fit is the more practical route, and is quoted as its own item.
Sourcing an uncommon key blank
Some keyway profiles are harder to source a matching blank for than others, particularly on older or less common machines, and locating the right blank can add to the time before cutting even starts.

You asked, we answered

Why does the number of wafers in a lock matter?

Each wafer represents one depth the key has to hit precisely for the lock to turn, so a lock with more wafers has more combinations and takes a little longer to decode or pick than a simpler one. Most motorcycle locks use around five wafers, and manufacturers sometimes space the depth increments further apart specifically to reduce the chance that an unrelated key happens to fit. This is why an ordinary-looking key rarely works in an unrelated bike.

Can the seat, fuel cap and ignition all be set to the same key?

On many serviceable, compatible systems, yes. Each lock is opened and its internal wafers are replaced with a set cut to match the ignition's combination, the same principle used to rekey a house lock applied to smaller hardware. Every lock is tested individually afterward so the finished key is confirmed against each one rather than assumed to work. Locks that were never on the same key from the factory can usually be brought together this way during one visit.

The key snapped off inside the ignition. Is that still a key job?

It starts the same way and adds one step. The broken piece is drawn out with tools made to grip it rather than push it deeper, and the ignition is then checked to see whether the break was a one-off or a sign the lock itself needs attention. A new key is generally cut from the two pieces or by decoding the lock, since a weakened copy could break again in the same spot.
