Good to know

These are notes, not lectures. Each one takes something people often get wrong about locks and keys, explains it in a paragraph or two, and leaves you better placed to decide what your doors need and what they can happily do without.

Is a double-cylinder deadbolt a good idea after a lockout?

A deadbolt keyed on both sides is sometimes suggested for doors with glass beside them, but on a main escape door it means finding a key to get out. A door people use to leave the home should open from the inside without a key or special knowledge, especially in an emergency. A single-cylinder deadbolt with a thumb-turn, paired with a reinforced strike and a proper glass film if needed, keeps both security and a clear way out. Home Lockout Service

How many keys should a business have, and who should hold them?

Fewer than most businesses think, and every one of them named. Two people who can open, one of whom can be reached on a day off, cover the door. Cleaners and contractors get a key only if they need one and hand it back when the arrangement ends. Write down who has what, collect keys when people leave, and rekey when one does not come back. Interior keys for the cash office or stockroom follow the same rule on a shorter list. Business Lockout Service

The key broke while the door was locked. Can you still get me in?

Yes. The fragment comes out first, because nothing else can happen while it blocks the keyway. With the cylinder clear and the plug at rest, the door is opened by the same non-destructive methods used for any lockout, then a working key is cut and tested. If the door is a rental, the visit is noted for the building manager on request. Broken Key Extraction

Will my insurer want to see the damage before it is repaired?

Insurers ask policyholders to document the loss, keep damaged property and hold on to receipts, and a securing visit is expected rather than discouraged, because an open door invites more loss. Photograph everything as found, keep the broken hardware in a bag, keep the invoice, and call your insurer as soon as the house is safe. The adjuster can see the old parts and the photos; the door itself need not stay open. Break-In Damage Lock Repair

Change or Rekey Locks

Will I need to prove I own or rent the home?

Yes, and it is a welcome part of the job. Rekeying decides who can enter, so the locksmith confirms the person asking has the standing to make that decision. For an owner that means photo identification alongside a document that links them to the property, for instance a property tax notice or the closing statement. A manager brings the owner's written authorization. A tenant mentions that the landlord has agreed and will be given a key, since tenancy rules here expect both to hold one. Lock Rekeying

Can a keypad or smart deadbolt be fitted instead of a keyed one?

Yes, and the preparation is the same. Many electronic deadbolts use the standard 54 mm bore and the same edge bore, so a door cut for a mechanical bolt often accepts one, and a keyed bolt fitted today can usually be swapped for a keypad later, subject to that model's own bore, backset and thickness needs. The locksmith checks door thickness against the model, fits a reinforced strike as usual, sets up codes with you and shows where the backup cylinder or battery terminals are. Deadbolt Installation

I have just bought a house. What should I do about the locks?

Assume that copies of the old keys exist somewhere and act on the day you take possession. Walk every exterior door with the locksmith, keep hardware that is sound and have it rekeyed to a new key, replace hardware that is worn or too light, and add a deadbolt to any door that lacks one. Ask for everything to be keyed alike so you leave with one key and a known number of copies. Lock Replacement & Upgrade

Can the lock be made more secure while keeping it original?

Yes, within reason. A later mortise case can take a modern high-security cylinder of the right thread and cam, chosen for its pick resistance; stopping casual key copying is a separate question, answered by fitting a restricted or patented key system alongside it. Longer screws into the strike and a properly seated deadbolt add more than most people expect. For a bit-key lock, the practical gains are a full-throw deadbolt and a good strike; if more is wanted, a separate modern deadbolt above it leaves the original lock untouched. High Security Locks

Can a safe be repaired instead of replaced after drilling?

Often, yes, particularly for a mechanical lock, where a worn wheel pack, drive cam or spindle can be replaced individually within the existing lock body. An electronic lock's circuit board and keypad are less often repairable in place and are more commonly swapped for a comparable or higher-rated replacement unit that fits the same cutout. Safe Opening & Combination Change

Do you deliver and move the safe, or do I need to arrange that?

Delivery and the final move into position are part of the service, using equipment suited to the safe's actual weight rather than improvising with furniture dollies or straps meant for lighter loads. The route in is measured ahead of time so doorways, stairs, and tight turns are accounted for before the unit arrives, which avoids a surprise at the one hallway that turns out to be too narrow. What should I do when a controlled key is lost?

Tell your locksmith so the register is updated, then decide together what the loss means. If the key was lost with nothing identifying your address, the practical risk is low and many people simply strike it off. If it went missing with identification or from a known person, the affected cylinders can be repinned so that key stops working while the rest of the system continues. Because the keyway is controlled, you know that no further copies exist. High Security Locks

We lost a master key. Does the whole building need doing?

Only the cylinders that master opened, which the keying chart identifies. If the lost key was the top master, that is every lock in the system; if it was a departmental master, it is that department's doors. Where no chart exists, the locksmith reads the cylinders first to establish what the key reached. The remaining doors, and any keys that never opened them, are left exactly as they are. Commercial Rekeying

Can different lock brands be mixed in one master key system?

Sometimes, but it depends on the keyway and pinning platform each brand uses; some are compatible with one another and some are not. Where a mix already exists on a property, the assessment identifies which cylinders can be brought into a single hierarchy and which need replacing with a matching platform so every level pins correctly across the whole set of doors. Master Key System Design

Do we still need physical keys after this is installed?

On hardware that supports it, yes: a conventional cylinder sits alongside the electronic reader, cut to work like any other key on the property, though some access-controlled locks are built without one. Where it is fitted, it is meant as a fallback rather than the everyday way in: if a battery dies, a controller faults, or the power stays out longer than the backup lasts, the door still opens by key while the issue is sorted out. Access Control Installation

What counts as panic hardware?

Panic hardware is a door-latching device, usually a crossbar or touchpad running most of the door's width, that releases the latch the moment someone pushes on it from the inside. It is built and tested so a light, even push anywhere along the bar opens the door, which is why it is chosen for doors serving rooms with enough people that fumbling for a key during an exit is not acceptable. The lock is frozen and the door will not budge. What will you do?

Ice is handled gently. Lock de-icer and mild warmth free the cylinder so it turns without force, and a door stuck to its seal is released by pressing along the edge to crack the ice rather than pulling the handle, which can tear the rubber. Hot water is never used because it refreezes and can crack glass. Afterwards the cylinder is lubricated with whatever product the vehicle maker specifies and the seals are treated with silicone. Car Lockout Service

What should I have ready when I call?

The year, make and model, and the VIN if you can read it through the windshield or from the permit. Whether any working key exists. Whether the car starts with a turned key or a push button, and what buttons the old fob had. Where the car is parked and whether it is locked. Your photo identification and the vehicle permit, or lease or fleet paperwork. With those, the right parts are in the van on the first trip. Car Key Replacement

Can a spare be made if the vehicle has an aftermarket alarm or remote starter installed?

Generally yes, though it is worth mentioning any aftermarket system when you call, since a factory immobilizer that has been wired into a third-party alarm or remote starter sometimes behaves differently from the standard setup the locksmith expects. Knowing this in advance lets the visit account for it rather than discovering it partway through programming. Spare Car Key Duplication

What is the difference between a remote, a transponder key and a proximity fob?

A basic remote only operates the locks and alarm from a distance while a separate metal key still starts the engine. A transponder key combines a cut blade with a chip the immobilizer reads before allowing a start. A proximity fob goes further: it authorizes entry while it is nearby, though most vehicles still need the handle touched, gripped or pressed to actually unlock, and it starts the engine with a push button, with no key insertion needed day to day. Each type is programmed differently. Key Fob Programming
